A Guide to a More Productive Unity Layout

There are many ways to increase your workflow with Unity and be more productive. One of those ways is to optimize your Unity Layout. Simply rearranging your layout can make a world of difference.

  • The first step is to make certain your layout is currently set to “Default”. To do this, select “Default” from the drop down menu at the top right of the Unity screen.
  • Next, you want to go back to the same drop down menu and select the “Tall” option.

Note: The “Tall” option gives you a larger Scene view and places your other panels in professional, optimized positions.

  • The next step to optimizing your layout is to click and drag the “Game” tab underneath the “Scene” tab and slide the “Game” panel up to the point where it is level with the “Project” panel.
Note: This setup will optimize your workflow by allowing easier and quicker access between the "Hierarchy", "Project", and "Inspector" panels.
  • If you are building a vertical game for mobile devices, the optimal layout would be made by moving the “Game” tab next to the “Scene” tab and adjust the sizes of the panels.

Adjusting Your Project Files View

The “Project” panel is set to preview mode by default. This mode allows viewing of only one folder at a time. To get a more optimal and productive setup for this is quick and easy.

  • First, click on the drop down menu on the top right of the “Project” panel and select “One Column Layout”. This will change your “Project” panel layout from a preview mode to a list mode. Now you can view multiple folder’s contents at the same time.

Saving Your More Productive Layout

Now that you have your layout set, you need to save it as a new template in order to utilize this layout the next time you open your Unity editor.

  • Click on the “Layout” drop down menu and select “Save Layout”.
Note: If you have been following along with this guide, your drop down menu will show "Tall" as the currently selected layout.
  • Give your layout template a name. I would suggest something simple like “Professional Layout”, but the choice is yours.
